Sunrise and Sunset Photography Tips

There are few images more compelling than a beautiful sunrise or sunset. Photographs of these events have been widely displayed in homes, books, and art galleries. It is not difficult to understand why: the sheer variety of colors, the unique lighting, and the new appearance given to familiar objects all make dusk and dawn entrancing times of day.

If you have taken a sunrise or sunset photograph that you are especially proud of, YourCanvasPhotos would be happy to expand it, mount it on a handmade canvas, and protect it with your choice of frame. To learn more about our display and touchup techniques, simply contact us today.

Making the Most of a Sunrise

A sunrise can be used as a backdrop to a beautiful photograph, or as the subject itself. To enhance your sunrise or sunset photographs, try some of these simple tips:

  • Experiment with camera settings. Some cameras have a special sunset mode that will automatically set the best focus and flash options. You may also want to try the night setting or panorama option. Take multiple photographs so you can choose your favorite.
  • Keep the horizon low. Many people make the mistake of placing the horizon at the center of a picture to create a kind of balance. Most of the time, however, it is the sky that you want to draw viewers’ attention to, not the ground. In most cases, the picture will look best with the horizon in its lower third.
  • Choose a subject. You may want a simple shot of a sunset that fills your canvas, but you may find the picture benefits from having a few objects to draw the eye. People, plants, animals, birds, and clouds can all add just the right touch to a picture. Turn your camera’s flash off to create eye-catching silhouettes.

If your photograph turns out especially well, we can help you turn it into a tasteful work of art that you can proudly show to friends, family, and co-workers.
