Using a Telephoto Lens
In photography, it is not always possible to get close enough to your subject to take the perfect picture. In these cases, a telephoto lens can come in handy. Telephoto lenses magnify your subject in a way that the physical length of the telephoto lens is less than the focal length. For example, if you use a telephoto lens, it might seem like you are three inches away from the subject with a specialized macro lens when you are really three feet away with a telephoto lens.
Advantages of Telephoto
In addition to being able to deceptively focus close-up on objects far away from the end of your telephoto lens, there are several other benefits of a telephoto lens, including:
- Portraiture. Because they can zoom in so tight on a subject even from far away, telephoto lenses have the great advantage of creating a sharp centerpiece while blurring the background. This is useful for photography so that the subject of the picture is truly the main, eye-catching component.
- Zoom without macro. If you do not have a macro lens, which typically requires you to get very close to your subject, a telephoto lens is another viable option for taking close-ups. Additionally, a telephoto offers the benefit of being able to remain further away from the object of your attention.
- "Kodak Moments." Telephoto lenses can capture details without forcing you to stand right by your subject. Therefore, it is easy to take a picture of a person's natural facial expressions or other such un-posed movements as they go about their actions. Taking pictures unnoticed is a good way to get natural and unforced shots.
